Is there a new wave of COVID-19?

COVID-19 cases

Several Asian countries are experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases, raising concerns for travelers planning visits to the region. Right now, in May 2025, some countries in Asia like Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia are seeing more people getting sick with COVID-19 again. Even though things were better for a while, the virus is starting to spread more, so people and governments are being extra careful.

Countries which are experiencing spike in the cases

Hong Kong: Scientists have found the virus in the city’s sewage water, which means many people might be sick even if they don’t know it yet.

Singapore: There were over 14,000 new cases recently, and doctors are asking everyone to wear masks again and keep some distance in crowded places.

Thailand: Thailand had big celebrations in April during a festival called Songkran, and after that, many more people got sick. Now, the government there has brought back temperature checks at airports and busy places. They are asking travelers to be extra careful and wear masks when outside.

Indonesia: In Indonesia, the number of COVID-19 cases went up by about 35–40%. A new version of the virus, called Omicron XBB 1.5, is spreading fast. Because of this, thermal scanners are back at airports and some places are not letting people travel in or out unless it’s really important.

If anyone is travelling soon to these countries, they need to take precautions to be on the safer side. Need to check what the government says and go only if necessary. And if you go, make sure to wear a mask, wash your hands often, and keep your vaccinations up to date.

People by this time are very aware of this virus as everyone has once experienced or lived in that environment. There is no need to panic and take extreme actions but be smart and vigilant when going out where there are chances to be sick.
