On Wednesday morning, there were skirmishes between residents and police officers over the construction of an illegal mosque in the Sanjauli district.
Demonstrators were heard screaming “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Himachal Ne Thaana Hai, Devbhoomi Ko Bachana Hai” as they marched towards the mosque, according to visuals.
Everything concerning the mosque
The maulvi of the mosque, Shahzad Imam, stated that although the extended building began after 2007, the original edifice dates to 1947, as reported in The Print. In 2010, a lawsuit was filed alleging that the mosque was operating illegally. On the other hand, four more floors have been added in the last 14 years. The municipal corporation heard the case 44 times without coming to a decision.

The five-story mosque gained attention in the community and political spheres following a fight that broke out last month between a group of individuals claiming to be its “occupants.”
On August 30, Four traders in the Malyana area were hurt after six members of the minority group allegedly attacked them with sticks and rods, wounding a businessman. The businessman, Yashpal Singh, lived in Kasumpti Assembly, close to Shimla, and was supposedly from Malyana.
A case was filed against Sarik (20), Saif Ali (23), Rohit (23), Rihan (17), Samir (17), and Gulnawaz (32). While one Rihan is from Dehradun, the other accused are from Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar.
Hindu organisations oppose
Hindu rights organisations called for the destruction of an “illegal” mosque at a large-scale demonstration last week at Chaura Maidan, close to the Vidhan Sabha. People flocked to Malyana, a neighbourhood outside of Sanjauli, where they made demands for the mosque’s removal.
This mosque was constructed without permission. The mosque’s four levels are not allowed. Anything that we build without permission gets demolished right away. Ten years have passed and nothing has been done about the mosque. A BJP employee taking part in the demonstration declared, “This illegal mosque should be demolished.”
Congress requests an inquiry.
The protest was sparked by claims made by Himachal Rural Development Minister Anirudh Singh that the mosque in Sanjauli was built illegally and that the construction process should be looked into.
“They began construction without getting permission. That structure was unlawful. He demanded an investigation into the building of the five-story mosque, saying that “first, one floor was built, then the rest followed.”
“Women now find it impossible to move around the Sanjauli market, and robberies are happening. Another important problem that requires attention and poses a threat to our nation and state is love jihad. Fights are happening,” he said.
Vikramaditya Singh versus Asaduddin Owaisi
Asaduddin Owaisi, an AIMIM MP, immediately criticized Singh’s comments, questioning if the Congress or the BJP was in charge of the Himachal Pradesh government.
“Mohabbat ki Dukaan’ from Himachal Pradesh is filled with hostility! Sharing a speech by Anirudh Singh, Owaisi stated, “In this video, the minister from Himachal Pradesh is speaking in BJP terminology.
Congressman Vikramaditya Singh, the minister of PWD and urban development for Himachal Pradesh, refuted Owaisi’s assertions by cautioning against politicisation of the matter.
All legal actions will be taken against the mosque located in the Sanjauli region of Shimla. In Himachal Pradesh, there is a rule of law, and everything that is done is governed by the law. In Himachal Pradesh, communalism has no place, he declared.
Congress Members show their disapproval.
But certain Congress leaders and ministers refused to support Singh’s viewpoint, therefore his comments made the previous day in the Assembly encountered internal resistance.
Congress MLA Harish Janartha refuted the minister’s assertion, stating that there was no tension in the region. He asserted that the mosque was constructed before 1960 and that three stories were “illegally” placed on Waqf Board property in 2010.
In Himachal Pradesh, the building of the mosque has become the subject of intense discussion. Regarding the suspected illegal construction, there have already been over 44 court hearings, but no verdict has been made.
Built on government land, the mosque has been under dispute for the past 14 years, according to Anirudh Singh.
Cannot enforce the law on oneself
Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, meanwhile, told reporters on Sunday that he respects all religions and that every state resident has the same rights.
“Peaceful protests are permitted but nobody will be allowed to take law into his hands,” he warned.
