On this day, our India was getting freedom from 200 years of slavery due to the struggle and sacrifice of millions of people. Partition of Pakistan and India
Actually, along with giving independence to India, the British were also dividing it into two parts on the basis of religion—one India and the other Pakistan. As soon as the news of partition spread, riots started in different parts of the country. Due to which the British government and the big leaders of India got scared. The British government believed that if India was given independence during the day and partition was done, then it could lead to riots in the whole country. Which would be difficult to control. For this reason, when most of the people of the country were sleeping deeply, the announcement of independence was made.
Viceroy Lord Mountbatten was not in India.
At the same time, the second reason given behind the independence of the country at midnight is that Pakistan got independence on 14 August, a day before India. Viceroy Lord Mountbatten had to go to Karachi to do the paperwork for the transfer, and from there the Viceroy had to return to India at night. Due to which it was decided that India should be liberated at midnight after the arrival of Viceroy Lord Mountbatten. However, the documents of the British government show that both Pakistan and India were liberated at the same time, i.e., at Zero Hour on 15 August 1947. Therefore, historians do not believe this argument.
