The controversy over Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship has taken a new turn. A petition was filed in the Allahabad High Court raising a question mark over Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship. The petition not only claimed that he was a foreign national but also sought a CBI probe into the matter. The petition also sought to know under what authority Rahul Gandhi was functioning as a Lok Sabha member.
The High Court has sought clarification from the Home Ministry. After hearing the petition, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has sought an explanation from the Ministry of Home Affairs. On Wednesday, the high court asked the Center whether it had taken any decision on the said factual statement filed under the Citizenship Act, 1955, seeking a probe into the allegations that Rahul Gandhi had British citizenship.”
A division bench of Justices Om Prakash Shukla and Rajan Roy was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Karnataka-based BJP activist S Vignesh Shishir. In the PIL, the petitioner claimed that he had made a detailed investigation on the issue of Gandhi’s British citizenship and had received several new inputs. The petitioner has sought a CBI probe into the allegations of Gandhi’s British citizenship. The next date of hearing in the case is September 30.
Earlier, similar petitions were filed in the court over Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship. Hearing the petitions, the court dismissed them, saying, “The petitioner should first complain to the competent authority.” Well, the matter even reached Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Citing the petition filed in the court, Om Birla demanded that Rahul Gandhi should not be allowed to work as an MP till the matter is settled by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
