After the Supreme Court’s decision on the Ayodhya dispute that has been going on for years in November 2019, there has been a spurt in cases related to temple mosques. Five years after the Ram Mandir verdict, claims of temples being under mosques have started being made in many cities. Although after the verdict in the Ayodhya dispute, it was hoped that the temple-mosque dispute would not gain momentum in other places, but after the Ayodhya verdict, about 16 such cases related to temple-mosque have come up across the country. The big thing is that 9 of these cases are new and 3 disputes are old. In this, there are 4 cases which have not yet reached the court’s threshold.

Talking about the 3 old disputes, it includes Varanasi’s Gyanvapi Mosque, Karnataka’s Baba Budangiri Dargah and Lucknow’s Teele Wali Masjid. These cases are already pending in the court. Let us tell you that in the last 4 years, 9 disputes related to temple-mosque have reached the court. In this, 5 cases alone are related to Uttar Pradesh. One case is related to Madhya Pradesh, one to the capital Delhi, one to Rajasthan and one case is related to Karnataka. Let us talk about those 3 disputes which are just in discussion right now. They are Delhi’s Jama Masjid, Vidisha’s Bija Mandal and Hyderabad’s Char Minar Pramukh. There is only a claim on them. Quwwat Masjid, Delhi Regarding the Quwwat-ul-Masjid built near Qutub Minar in Delhi, it has been said that this mosque has been built by demolishing the temples of many Hindu deities. However, in the year 2021, the court rejected the petition related to the dispute and said that “the peace of the present era cannot be disturbed.”
Jumma Masjid, Mangaluru
In the year 2022, in Mangaluru city of Karnataka, it was claimed that there is a Hindu temple under this mosque. A large number of remains and idols related to the temple are present below. Many organizations are demanding excavation here and a survey by ASI. Like other cases, this matter is still pending in the court.
Dargah of Ajmer Sharif, Rajasthan
This new controversy has come to the fore over the world famous Ajmer Sharif Dargah. Actually, this dargah located in Ajmer, Rajasthan is the dargah of Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. Regarding the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, it was claimed by the Hindu organization that “There used to be a Shiva temple here earlier. Which was destroyed and this dargah was built.” This matter is also going on in the court.
Bhojshala dispute, Madhya Pradesh
Bhojshala Mosque located in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh is also in controversy. Hindus consider this mosque to be the temple of Vagdevi i.e. Saraswati Devi, while Muslims say that “this is Kamal Maula Masjid. Let us tell you that in the year 2022, after the order of the High Court, a survey of Bhojshala was conducted. Apart from 94 idols, a large number of coins were found in this survey. At present, this matter is also pending in the Supreme Court.
Shahi Idgah Mosque, Mathura
A total of 18 cases have been filed in the Supreme Court regarding the Shahi Idgah Mosque of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. In fact, in the year 2020, many organizations claimed that “the mosque was built at the birthplace of Shri Krishna. However, the matter reached the High Court through the local court. The High Court appointed a court commissioner for the survey, but later the Supreme Court put a stay on the survey itself.
Atala Mosque, Jaunpur
This case of Atala temple-mosque of Jaunpur is also related to Uttar Pradesh. It is being claimed in this that this mosque was built by demolishing the Atala Devi temple. This claim was opposed by the Sunni Central Waqf Board. After the protest, the matter reached the court. On this matter, the judge said that “When cases like Gyanvapi and Mathura can be heard, then why can’t this be heard.”

Shamsi Jama Masjid, Badaun
Many Hindu organizations claim that the Shamsi Jama Masjid located in Badaun district of UP has been built by demolishing the temple of Neelkanth Mahadev. This dispute is pending in the court since the year 2022. Regarding this, the Muslim side claims that it is a thousand years old mosque and it was built in the 13th century by Sultan Shamsuddin Iltutmish of the slave dynasty.
Jama Masjid, Fatehpur Sikri
It has been claimed about the Jama Masjid located in Fatehpur Sikri, UP that earlier there used to be a temple of Kamakhya Devi here. Which was later demolished and made a mosque. The Sunni Central Waqf Board and the Masjid Management Committee are fighting a case against the claim of it being a temple. This matter is also in court. Jama

This matter came into the headlines due to the violence that broke out after the local court in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh ordered a survey of the Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid on 19 November last month. Opposition parties created a ruckus over this matter. 5 people died and many were injured in this violence. It has been claimed that this mosque was built by demolishing the Harihar temple. The matter has now reached the Supreme Court.
