Tashi Namgyal, the Ladakhi shepherd who alerted the Indian Army about Pakistan’s intrusion in the Kargil sector in May 1999, passed away. He died at Garkhon in the Aryan Valley of Ladakh. He was 58. Earlier this year, Namgyal had attended the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations in Drass along with his daughter Tsering Dolkar, who is a teacher.

“Fire and Fury Corps pays tribute to Tashi Namgyal on his sudden demise,” the Leh-based Fire and Fury Corps wrote on social media platform X. A brave patriot of Ladakh is gone. Let his soul find peace. ” Recalling his invaluable contribution, the Army said his name will always be written in golden letters. He also expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family in this time of grief.

In 1999, Tashi Namgyal was searching for his lost yak when he saw Pakistani soldiers dressed in Pathani dress digging bunkers in the Batalik mountain range. Sensing the seriousness of the situation, he immediately informed the Indian Army. Due to this alertness, the army prepared to attack the enemies in time, which foiled Pakistan’s plans.

Role in the Kargil War
In the Kargil War fought between 3 May and 26 July 1999, the Indian Army foiled Pakistan’s secret mission. Their plan to cut the Srinagar-Leh highway remained intact. Tashi Namgyal’s alertness and courage proved crucial in India’s victory. His contribution made him immortal as a brave shepherd and patriot.
