Tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban have escalated. After the recent killing of 16 Pakistani soldiers by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terrorists, Pakistan carried out air strikes in Afghanistan’s Paktika and Khost provinces. Nearly 50 people were killed in the attacks. Pakistan has claimed that it has targeted TTP terrorists in these air strikes.
Taliban’s response
Angered by the attacks, the Taliban claimed to have killed 19 Pakistani soldiers by attacking Pakistani army posts near the Durand Line. The Taliban also claimed to have captured two Pakistani posts.
The Durand Line Controversy
The Durand Line, which was drawn by the British, has long been a subject of controversy. Afghanistan has never recognised this line. Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been rising since then. After the recent developments, the controversy over the Durand Line has once again deepened.
Situation and conflict
The clashes between the two sides continued till Saturday night. However, the situation is currently calm. Tens of thousands of Afghans have fled the violence. The Pakistan Army has admitted that clashes took place at several places along the Durand Line, but says only one Pakistani soldier was killed in these attacks.
Afghanistan’s stance
Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry issued a statement on the conflict, calling the Durand Line an “imaginary line.” The ministry said that on December 28, Pakistani areas from where attacks were carried out on Afghan soil were attacked. The Afghan army claimed to have destroyed several Pakistani posts.

Taliban’s announcement
The Taliban has again made it clear that it does not recognise the Durand Line. “This is an imaginary line and will never be accepted by any government in Afghanistan,” the Afghan defence ministry spokesman said. The Taliban also reiterated that the area across the Durand Line is not part of Pakistan. The issue of the Durand Line has been a bone of contention between Pakistan and Afghanistan for decades. The recent conflict has further inflamed this dispute, making the restoration of peace in the region a major challenge.
