In Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district, a particular community attacked the immersion of Durga idols on Sunday. There was stone-pelting, arson, and firing. Two people died on the spot, while one died during treatment in a hospital. After the incident, heavy police forces have been deployed in the area. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that no one involved in the incident will be spared. The CM has suspended six policemen, including the in-charge of Hardi police station and the outpost in-charge, for negligence.

The incident took place at Bahrampur village in Haripur upazila. An idol of Maa Durga was installed here, and a procession was taken out for immersion of the idol on Sunday evening. When the procession reached the Maharajganj market, people of the Khas community started pelting stones at the idols. It is being told that after this, the people involved in the immersion also vandalized vehicles and houses and set many houses on fire. 22-year-old Ram Gopal Mishra, a resident of Rehua Mansur village, was killed, and another person, Rajan, was injured in the firing.

After this incident, there was panic in the entire area. Protests and arson continued in the area till late in the night. Angry over the death of the young man, the people also blocked the Nanpara-Lakhimpur highway late at night and demanded action against the DM-SP. According to eyewitnesses, the entire controversy started over a song. When the procession reached the Maharajganj market, a song was playing on the DJ. Angered by this, Sonar Abdul Hamid, along with his sons Sablu, Sarfaraz, and Fahim, reached the procession and started abusing.

The puja committee has alleged that the SHO was not present at the spot at the time of the incident. As the protest turned violent, the police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. Following the incident, police have sealed off the entire area. Senior police and administration officials are present at the spot.
