Saint Tulsidas’s Life
Saint Tulsidas was born in the village of Rajapur, Uttar Pradesh, around 1554 (1532 AD). Originally called Rambola, he eventually adopted the name Tulsidas. His life was difficult because he lost both of his parents when he was young. It is believed that Tulsidas, who had been pregnant for 12 months, spoke the word “Ram” at the moment of his birth. Kashi (modern-day Varanasi) educated him in Sanskrit, the Vedas, the Puranas, and other sacred writings.

“Ramcharitmanas,” the principal work of Tulsidas Ji, is a lovely account of the life and ideals of Lord Shri Ram. Tulsidas Ji wrote this epic in Awadhi instead of Sanskrit to reach a wider audience. Tulsidas ji is also the author of “Vinaya Patrika,” “Kavitavali,” “Hanuman Chalisa,” “Dohavali,” and “Krishna Geetavali.” His writings have a strong religious, moral, and devotional message. Today, every household still reads “Hanuman Chalisa” with reverence.
