During an episode of his radio program Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought our attention to the ‘Digital arrest scam’ and that the people get more alert. He also said that no government agency shall ever contact via phone or video call for such an investigation.
A digital arrest scam involves scammers pretending to be government officials via a phone call or any digital device. Often, the victim falls into the trap of being part of an illegal activity, such as the movement of drugs or a suspicious package. Arranging a combination of sets and costumes depicting police stations and official badges, scammers convincingly make their fake identities seem real.
How to stay safe from digital scams
Scammers conveniently lie and misguide the victims about the law and create a stressful situation for them, bombarding them with loads of misinformation and making them feel clueless due to a lack of law information. The PM also said that the scammers play different characters like police, CBI, narcotics, and at times RBI officials. Using such tags, they pretend to be that character and try to converse being that officer with a lot of confidence.
Such a scam is not just happening with people who are less educated or have less exposure to the current times but also happening with people who are very educated and smart. Huge amounts have been stolen from wealthy individuals as well. Earlier this month, it was reported that scammers trapped the textile industry doyen S P Oswal into transferring Rs 7 crore to their bank accounts.
The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) is a dedicated wing under the cyber and information security division of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs for cybercrime cases. Therefore, I4C has blocked more than 1,000 Skype IDs linked to such activities after collaborating with Microsoft. Awareness campaigns have also been launched.
