The dates for the Maharashtra Assembly elections are likely to be announced by October 10, but before that, a dispute has once again started in the NCP over the election symbol. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has moved the Supreme Court over the issue. Sharad Pawar has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a ban on the use of the ‘clock’ symbol by the Ajit Pawar-led NCP during the Maharashtra Assembly elections.

A new political war is between Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar

In his petition filed in the Supreme Court, the NCP-SP chief has said that “along with the ban on the watch symbol, the Election Commission should be directed to allot a new symbol to Ajit Pawar’s NCP.”With Sharad Pawar reaching the Supreme Court before the assembly elections, it is believed that a new political war is going to break out between the uncle-nephew.

Election Commission gives Clock symbol to Ajit Pawar’s faction

Ajit Pawar had broken away from the NCP and joined the Mahayuti along with several MLAs. After this rift, both the factions had approached the Election Commission. After hearing the arguments of both sides and observing the legislative majority, the commission had in February this year recognised the Ajit Pawar-led faction as the official NCP. Along with this, Ajit Pawar also got the NCP’s election symbol ‘clock’. The Ajit Pawar faction had contested the last Lok Sabha elections with the ‘clock’ symbol.

Voters confused over election symbol: Sharad Pawar

Sharad Pawar has argued in his petition to the Supreme Court that the ‘clock’ symbol was used by the Ajit Pawar faction in the Lok Sabha elections. This created confusion among the voters and inadvertently they gave their precious vote to the Ajit Pawar faction. Our party suffered a huge loss due to this confusion. Sharad Pawar, in his petition, also said that “the constituencies in the assembly elections are relatively smaller in size, which is likely to cause more confusion among the voters.” Therefore, the election symbol should be banned.”During the pendency of this case, if assembly elections are held, a new symbol should be allotted to the Ajit Pawar faction for a limited purpose,” Pawar said.A bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Surya Kant will hear Pawar’s plea on October 15.
