The Union Cabinet has approved the ‘One Nation, One Election “proposal. According to sources, the bill is likely to be tabled in Parliament during the ongoing winter session. The government has decided to take suggestions from all political parties on this issue. The bill will be introduced in the Parliament after discussion. Earlier, the committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind had submitted its report related to ‘One Nation, One Election’ to the government. According to sources, the proposal was presented by the Law Minister in the cabinet meeting and Union Home Minister Amit Shah gave a detailed briefing about it.
Lok Sabha and assembly elections are being held together in the state
Under the ‘One Nation, One Election “scheme, elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies will be held simultaneously. The Ram Nath Kovind-led committee has suggested that elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies be held simultaneously in the first phase. Further, the report states that local body elections should also be concluded within 100 days of these elections.
What is the purpose of ‘one nation, one election’?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been advocating ‘one nation, one election’ for a long time. They say that the election process should be limited to three or four months so that the focus can be on development beyond politics for five years. At the same time, the expenses incurred due to frequent elections can be reduced and the administrative machinery should not be overburdened. This means simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies across the country.
Elections have already been held.
The idea of ‘one nation, one election’ is not new to India. After independence, simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies were held in 1952, 1957, 1962 and 1967. But due to the reorganization of states and other political reasons, this streak was broken, and elections began to be held at different times.

Why is’ One Nation, One Election ‘important?
The Modi government believes that this scheme will bring many benefits to the country:
- Reducing the cost of elections: Repeated elections lead to expenditure of crores of rupees, which can be reduced.
- relief to the people: People will be liberated from the atmosphere of repeated elections.
- The political stability: This model can be helpful in bringing political stability in the country.
- Focus on development activities: Instead of going into election mode again and again, governments will be able to focus on development.
- Administrative Reforms: This will save time and energy of the officers, which will improve governance.
- Economic benefits: The burden on the government exchequer will be less and the pace of economic growth will be faster.
- The stability of the policy: There will be no problem of frequent change in policies.
It will not be easy to agree on the ‘One Nation One Election’ proposal, but if it is implemented, it can prove to be a big change for Indian democracy and administrative system.
