National Conference Party in Jammu and Kashmir: How to keep 5 promises, including Article 370

The BJP’s dream of celebrating Vijayotsav before Dussehra in Jammu and Kashmir could not become a reality. The Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have allied to form a government in the state. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was also sworn in as the Chief Minister. The voters of Jammu and Kashmir voted on different issues in the election, but while the voters of Muslim-majority Kashmir were united at the time of voting, the voters of Hindu-majority Jammu were divided.

While the voters of Kashmir chose the Chief Minister of their division by voting for the National Conference to protect their interests, the voters of Jammu voted keeping in mind the local issues and candidates. All the parties won seats in the Jammu division. The National Conference won 42 seats, BJP 29, Congress 6, PDP 3, Independents 7, and others 1-1. The BJP had hoped to win more seats, but that did not materialize. The results of this election after the abrogation of Article 370 are going to give a big message. To win the elections, the NC had made many big promises to the public; now it has to be seen how it fulfills these promises.

The NC had promised the people that it would restore Article 370 if voted to power. Now he is ready to take power. In such a situation, it has to be seen whether NC can fulfill its big promise. Or it turns out to be a false promise.

The government bifurcated Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories—Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. NC has promised to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The NC has also promised the people of Jammu and Kashmir the release of political prisoners. Under the guise of this, an assurance has also been given to release such people who used to spread panic in the valley by carrying out stone-pelting and other incidents. It will be interesting to see how NC manages to live up to this promise. The NC has promised to provide 200 units of electricity and 12 LPG cylinders free of charge. Similarly, alliance partner Congress has also promised to give Rs 3000 per month to women. If the NC goes ahead with its promise of reimposing Article 370, a confrontation with the Center is certain. In such a situation, how NC fulfills this promise without the help of the Center will be worth watching.
