The Indian Army said on Wednesday that an encounter in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir resulted in the death of a militant and the injuries of a non-commissioned officer (NCO) just hours after security forces launched an anti-terrorism operation.

This incident happened just 24 hours after forces in Poonch successfully thwarted a militant infiltration attempt from across the Line of Control, resulting in the sacrifice of an Indian Army soldier..

Kupwara Encounter Details

In response to specific information about the presence of terrorists, the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps announced on X that the Indian Army and @JmuKmrPolice had launched a Joint Search Operation in the general area of Kowut, Kupwara.

On Tuesday, vigilant soldiers confronted the suspects after noticing suspicious movements. Terrorists responded by opening indiscriminate fire, resulting in a gunbattle.

The subsequent firefight resulted in the elimination of one terrorist and the injury of an NCO. The Indian Army announced that the operation is currently underway.

A recent increase in terrorist activity

This occurs in light of the recent increase in violence in the valley. The Indian Express, citing officials, reports that gunfights in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday resulted in the death of a militant. The incident resulted in minor injuries to two individuals, a combatant and a civilian.

Additionally, last week’s encounter with a group of militants in the Koti forests in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir resulted in the Sacrifice of four Army personnel, including a captain.

Since the June 9 terror attack on a bus transporting pilgrims to Reasi, a surge in militant activity has occurred in Jammu, with the security establishment frequently being the target. Since then, encounters in the Reasi, Kathua, and Doda districts of the Jammu division have resulted in the deaths of at least 10 security personnel and the injuries of numerous others.

Government response and security measures

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah collaborated with the Indian Army and Navy to intensify search operations in response to the incident. He also pledged to resolve any issues related to road development that may have contributed to the catastrophe. Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy criticized the region’s unscientific approach to road construction, attributing the damage caused by landslides to substandard construction methods.

For rescue efforts, the state administration is providing essential apparatus and logistical support. These collaborative efforts aim to prevent further deaths and offer assistance to those affected.
