Kargil Vijay Diwas 2024: Saluting 11 Iconic War Heroes Who Set the Standard for Courage and Sacrifice

On July 26, we celebrate Kargil Vijay Diwas 2024 to honor the brave soldiers who fought in the Kargil War and their sacrifices. On Kargil Vijay Diwas 2024, we remember the successful “Operation Vijay,” which was a campaign to take back land that Pakistani invaders had taken in the Kargil-Drass region. People all over the world remember the brave troops who put their lives on the line to keep our country safe.

Why Kargil Vijay Diwas Is Important

Every year on July 26, Pakistan and India remember the soldiers who died in the Kargil War from May to July 1999. This is called Kargil Vijay Diwas. People remember this war for how awful the conditions were and how strong the Indian Army was. This day also marks the end of “Operation Vijay,” the military offensive that India used to beat the Pakistani troops.

1. Captain Vikram Batra (Param Vir Chakra)

One of the most famous heroes of the Kargil War is Captain Vikram Batra. Vikram Batra was born on September 9 1974 in a small town in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh. He helped to take back Peak 5140, which has a view of Tololing Nullah. He was incredibly brave and became famous for saying, “Yeh Dil Mange More!” 

Captain Vikram Batra led the team to the summit even though the enemy was firing heavily, earning the nickname “Tiger of Drass.”

 He saved another man during war on another mission to take Peak 4875. After his death, he received India’s greatest military honor, the Param Vir Chakra.

2. Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav


Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav was the youngest person to receive the Param Vir Chakra. He was born on May 10, 1980, in Sikandrabad, Uttar Pradesh. During the Kargil War, he was in the Ghatak Platoon and played an important role in taking over the bunkers on Tiger Hill. Despite his severe injuries, he persevered, enabling his group to scale the cliff and accomplish their objective. The plan was successful in large part because of his bravery and determination.

3. Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey, also known as Param Vir Chakra, passed away.


Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey served in the 1/11 Gorkha Rifles. Manoj Kumar was born on June 25 1975, Rudra Village in the Sitapur district in  Uttar Pradesh. During the Kargil War, he led his troops in a number of attacks to push back the invaders. Despite his severe injuries, he continued to guide his men, ultimately leading them to capture the Jaubar Top and Khalubar Hill. After his death, his bravery and guidance earned him the Param Vir Chakra.

4. Lieutenant Balwan Singh


Lieutenant Balwan Singh led his Ghatak Platoon in the attack on Tiger Hill. He was born in Rohtak, Haryana, in October 1973. Despite heavy enemy fire and severe injuries, he continued to attack and guided his team to victory. He got the Mahavir Chakra, India’s second-highest military award, for being brave and a good leader.

5. Maj. Rajesh Singh Adhikari (Maha Vir Chakra)


Major Rajesh Singh Adhikari, who was born in Nainital, Uttarakhand, in December 1970, led the attack on Tololing with his group. Despite his injuries, he continued to lead his men, successfully capturing the enemy position. After his death, the Maha Vir Chakra honored his bravery and sacrifice.

6. Sanjay Kumar is a rifleman (Param Vir Chakra).


Sanjay Kumar, a rifleman who was born in March 1976 in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, showed outstanding bravery in the Kargil War. Despite his injuries, he darted towards enemy bunkers as part of his mission to capture Point 4875. His deeds were crucial in achieving the goal, earning him the Param Vir Chakra.

7. Vivek Gupta, Major (Maha Vir Chakra)


Major Vivek Gupta, hailing from Dehradun, led the attack on Tololing Top. Under heavy enemy fire, he led from the front, fought hand-to-hand, and took the enemy position. After his death, he received the Maha Vir Chakra as a tribute to his bravery and leadership.

8. Captain N. Kenguruse (Maha Vir Chakra)


Captain N. Kenguruse, who was born in Kohima, Nagaland, in July 1974, led a dangerous commando task during Operation Vijay. Despite his injuries, he independently scaled a rock wall and destroyed an enemy machine gun post. He received the Maha Vir Chakra in honor of his bravery after his death.

9. Lt. Keishing Nongrum William Clifford, Maha Vir Chakra


The men under Lt. Keishing Clifford Nongrum, who was born in March 1975 in Shillong, Meghalaya, took over Point 4812. Despite suffering severe injuries, he persevered and ultimately achieved the objective. After his death, he received the Maha Vir Chakra as a tribute to his bravery and sacrifice.

10. Naik Digendra Kumar


Naik Digendra Kumar, who was born in Sikar, Rajasthan, in July 1969, was very brave during the attack on Tololing. Despite his injuries, he provided effective cover fire, enabling his teammates to secure the objective. He received the Maha Vir Chakra for his actions.

11. Captain Amol Kalia (Vir Chakra)


During the Kargil War, Captain Amol Kalia led his team on a crucial task. He was from Nangal, Punjab. Despite suffering severe injuries, he persevered and ultimately achieved the objective. After his death, he received the Vir Chakra as a tribute to his bravery and sacrifice.

Kargil Vijay Diwas 2024 is a day for all Indians to be proud and remember. Today is a time to remember the brave heroes who fought and died for their country. Today is a day to remember the bravery, dedication, and sacrifice of these heroes. Let us also try to live by the ideals they fought for. We are still motivated by their work to make India stronger, more united, and more wealthy.
