Is India doing something wrong by offering Sheikh Hasina temporary asylum?

Sheikh Hasina

Despite recent political turmoil in Bangladesh, a neighboring country, peace appears to be gradually returning. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has formed an interim government in Bangladesh. In such a scenario, the biggest question after the government’s formation is: when will there be democratic elections in Bangladesh? The regulations mandate that elections must be conducted 90 days following the establishment of the interim government; however, there has been no official announcement concerning the election dates. Meanwhile, the violence that erupted during the month-long anti-reservation student agitation has confirmed the deaths of over 600 individuals.

Targeted Hindus Minorities

Note that this violence has primarily targeted Bangladesh’s minority community. Hindus constitute about 8 percent of the country’s population. They also openly support Sheikh Hasina’s party, the Awami League. That’s why they were killed. These days, sad news is increasingly making its way into the media. Despite the eradication of Hindu life in Bangladesh, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina is currently relocating to India. She is not sure where she would go for safety or when she would leave India. Possibility She might decide to spend a few more days in India considering security issues. The important thing to note here is that the Hindus who openly supported Sheikh Hasina have now lost their lives. As a result, it has become difficult for them to live there.

The opposition party in Bangladesh has objected to the Indian government’s Action.

Sheikh Hasin’s mistake undoubtedly penalizes Hindus in Bangladesh. The Indian government is keeping a close watch on the entire situation. They are not only keeping watch, but also exerting pressure to end the violence. While this is commendable, the party led by former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Khaleda has objected to the Indian government’s role. The party says that by giving shelter to Sheikh Hasina, India is creating a sour relationship with neighboring countries. “Prime Minister Modi has created a gulf between Delhi and Dhaka by sheltering a criminal,” the opposition Bangladesh National Party said.”

India Needs to be Cautious

Needless to say, the Indian government will have to take steps in this regard. “After resigning, Sheikh Hasina’s taking shelter in India is by mutual consent.” In such a scenario, Bangladeshis are unlikely to view it positively. Until the neighboring country of Bangladesh installs a new government, the Indian government must take decisive action on the international arena. The timing of Bangladesh’s elections and the subsequent administration’s establishment are still uncertain. Most importantly, will India maintain the same level of relationship with the new government as it did with the previous one if someone other than Sheikh Hasina forms it? Pakistan, India’s primary adversary, is unlikely to want to improve India’s relations with its neighbors. Therefore, India must manage the situation by implementing a diplomatic strategy. Simultaneously, India must address its own security concerns. Naturally, the likelihood of thousands of infiltrations from Bangladesh could also increase.

Connection with Bangladesh

However, it’s important to note that India maintains a close relationship with Bangladesh. However, India needs to be cautious. In such a situation, the most pressing question is whether the fundamentalists in Bangladesh are targeting the minority Hindus living there because they have given shelter to Sheikh Hasina. It’s a serious but valid question. Only time will tell if this is right or wrong. Overall, India needs to be cautious for the future.
