Amid the ongoing political upheaval in Syria, there is a happy news for Indians. The rebel forces in Syria had toppled the government of Bashar al-Assad, ending its 50-year rule. Meanwhile, just two days after the coup, the Indian government on Tuesday safely evacuated 75 Indian citizens from there. According to the statement of the Ministry of External Affairs, this operation was carried out under the supervision of the Indian Embassy in Damascus and Beirut. The Ministry of External Affairs said that “this step was taken only after assessing the security situation in Syria.” In fact, Assad’s government fell in Syria on 8 December. The biggest reason for the fall of Assad’s government was that the rebels took control of the capital Damascus after capturing several big cities and towns. The rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham captured Damascus. After the capture of Damascus, Bashar al-Assad fled the country.
Indian citizens have reached Lebanon safely
According to the information received, a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs said that “The Government of India has evacuated 75 Indian citizens from Syria on 10 December after the recent developments.” The statement said that “the evacuated people include 44 pilgrims from Jammu and Kashmir, who were stranded in Sayeda Zainab. All the Indian citizens have reached Lebanon safely and they will return to India from there.” The Ministry of External Affairs said that “After assessing the security situation, the Indian embassies in Damascus and Beirut carried out a coordinated process of evacuation.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs said that “The government gives top priority to the safety of Indian citizens living abroad. The ministry also said that “Indian citizens living in Syria are advised to stay in touch with the Indian Embassy in Damascus. The government is closely monitoring the situation.” Not only this, the Ministry of External Affairs has advised the Indian citizens remaining in Syria to “stay in touch with the Indian Embassy in Damascus on the emergency WhatsApp helpline number +963 993385973 and email ID hoc.damascus@mea.gov.in for the latest updates.
