Did former CDS General Bipin Rawat’s helicopter crash due to a mistake?

On 08 December 2021, the MI-17 V5 aircraft flew from Sulur Air Force Base in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu to the Defense Staff Service Colleges in Wellington, but a few minutes before landing, it crashed into the hills. Let us tell you that the military helicopter crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu. CDS General Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 12 other armed forces were killed in this accident. 11 people died on the spot in this incident. Group Captain Varun Singh was the only survivor of the helicopter crash, but he also died during treatment a week later. In the initial phase, that accident was termed as a conspiracy of foreign forces. However, a high-level inquiry was ordered, setting aside all speculations. And a parliamentary committee was formed to investigate this accident.

This accident was caused by human error

The parliamentary committee constituted to investigate the death of CDS General Bipin Rawat in its report has attributed the Mi-17 V5 helicopter crash that occurred on 8 December 2021 to human error. According to the information, the report of the Standing Committee on Defense shows that “the accident that happened that day was caused by human error.” After this incident, the investigating officials had initially said that “the accident occurred due to entering the clouds due to unexpected change in weather conditions in the valley. This caused spatial disorientation of the pilot, which led to this accident.”

A total of 34 accidents had occurred

According to media reports, in the report presented in Parliament on Tuesday, the Standing Committee on Defense shared data related to the number of accidents of Indian Air Force aircraft during the 13th Defense Plan period. According to the report, a total of 34 accidents took place, including nine accidents with Indian Air Force aircraft in 2021-22 and 11 plane accidents in 2018-19. According to media reports, there is a column titled Reason in this report in which human error has been stated as the cause of the accident.
