He was also the Foreign Minister and former Governor of Maharashtra. His death has caused irreparable loss to the country.
Who was SM Krishna?
SM Krishna was born in the year 1932 in Mandya district of Karnataka. His father’s name was SC Mallaiah. Krishna received his early education from Maharaja College, Mysore. From there he obtained a bachelor’s degree. After this, he took a law degree from a government college in Bangalore. He went to America for higher education. And there he completed his graduation. After completing his graduation, he started teaching international law. The amazing thing is that his interest in politics grew while he was in America.
Once campaigned for John F. Kennedy’s presidential election
You can guess his interest in politics from the fact that he also campaigned for John F. Kennedy’s presidential election. After this, he was elected a member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1962. Meanwhile, he married Prema on 29 April 1964. Talking about his political career, he was elected MP from Mandya in Karnataka several times. He served as a minister during the reign of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. Not only this, during the year 1983-84, SM Krishna was the Minister of State for Industry and Finance during Indira Gandhi’s tenure and between 1984-85 during Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure. Then in the years 1996 and 2006, he was elected a Rajya Sabha member. Apart from this, Krishna was a member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

He was the Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008
Well, during this time he also served as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and Deputy Chief Minister from 1989-1992. In the year 1999, he became the President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress and led the party to victory in the state. After winning in the state, he remained the Chief Minister of Karnataka till 2004. During this time he supported the Public-Private Partnership (PPP). Many development works were done in the state during his tenure. He was the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004. After this, he was the Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008. Then on 22 May 2009, the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh included him in the Union Cabinet and entrusted him with the responsibility of the Ministry of External Affairs.
