Bangladesh elections: Confusion over interim government’s rule and election dates

Since Sheikh Hasina’s ouster, Bangladesh has been ruled by an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. Since the formation of the interim government, the demand to announce the election dates in the country has intensified. Amid mounting pressure, Mohammad Yunus has recently said that elections can be held in late 2025 or early 2026 (Bangladesh Election). 

According to reports published by the Dhaka Tribune, major political parties, including the BNP headed by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, want early elections. However, despite the criticism and protests, Mohammad Yunus has not yet announced the exact date of the election. “Some important reforms are necessary before the election. 

Yunus has repeatedly appealed that the elections should be held only after reforming the election process and implementing necessary changes. 

Muhammad Yunus’s reaction

“If a political consensus is reached and the errors in the election rolls can be rectified with minor corrections, it will be possible to hold elections by the end of 2025,” Yunus said. However, if the recommendations of the Election Commission and the required reforms are to be implemented, it may take six more months.”

The election process in Bangladesh The election process in Bangladesh is similar to that in India. The election of the members of Parliament is held in the same manner as the election of the Lok Sabha of India. General elections are held every five years for 300 seats, while 50 seats are reserved for women. Elections are not held on reserved seats; women are selected based on the proportion of MPs who win on these seats.

The candidate who gets the most votes is declared the winner. After the election, the largest party or coalition elects its leader, who becomes the Prime Minister of the country. There are a total of 350 seats in the Parliament of Bangladesh. 

Mohammad Yunus’s lack of clarity on the election dates has led to confusion among political parties and the public. However, Yunus has spoken of giving priority to election reforms and transparency, which is a positive initiative for the strengthening of democracy. The future of political stability and democratic processes in Bangladesh in the coming years will depend on reforms.
