Both India and Bangladesh celebrate the victory over Pakistan on December 16, 1971. Every year both countries invite each other’s war veterans and officials to participate in the celebrations. To celebrate this Vijay Diwas, eight Indian military veterans of Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War arrived in Dhaka, while eight Bangladesh Army officers have arrived in Kolkata to join the Victory Day celebrations in both countries. On this occasion, memories of the Liberation War are refreshed.

Although Bangladesh celebrates its Independence Day on March 26, Dhaka emerged as the independent capital of an independent country on December 16 after a nine-month liberation war with Indian assistance. Every year this day is celebrated as Vijay Diwas. The Indian High Commission said in a statement that “these annual bilateral visits provide a platform for Mukti Jodha and Mukti War veterans to celebrate the unique friendship of the two countries.” Bangladesh officials and the Indian High Commission in Dhaka said that “the delegation includes two officials from each country who will attend the ceremony in Dhaka and Kolkata.”

The Bangladesh delegation also includes Mukti Jodha, who was part of the guerrilla resistance force in East Pakistan during the 1971 war and was opposing Pakistani rule there. Meanwhile, a political analyst in Dhaka said that “the visit of veterans to each other’s countries reminds us of the friendship that was forged in 1971.” He further said that Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s one-day visit to Dhaka on December 9 along with his counterpart Jasim Uddin has partially eased tensions in bilateral relations between the two countries.”
