The exit polls for the Haryana assembly elections are out. All these exit polls show a Congress government in power in the state after 10 years. If this happens, it will be a major setback for the BJP, as it was claiming to form the government for the third consecutive time in Haryana. Now the question is, if these exit polls are correct, what is the reason for the BJP to lag in Haryana?
Let’s take a look at the major issues due to which the BJP seems to be moving away from power in the state
1. Anti-incumbency sentiment
The BJP has been in power in Haryana for the last 10 years. During this time, there was an anti-incumbency wave against the BJP over many unresolved issues, including the farmers’ movement and discrimination against wrestlers. To quell the growing discontent against the government, the BJP replaced the then Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar with Nayab Saini in March 2024, but it did not have much impact on the ground.
2. Unemployment
Unemployment has been an issue in Haryana, which the opposition raised a lot during the elections. Haryana’s unemployment rate is almost double the national average. At the same time, there was resentment among the youth about the Agniveer scheme. To address the anger of the youth, the BJP in its manifesto had also promised 2 lakh pucca jobs and government jobs to all Agniveers, but by then it was too late.
3. Anger among urban voters
The BJP is traditionally seen as a party of urban voters, but this time in Haryana, the urban voters were also angry with the BJP. Urban voters, who were facing many problems due to rising inflation, lack of facilities, and even small work, were alienated from the BJP. The voter turnout in urban areas was also low.
4. Corruption and bureaucracy
In Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar, as chief minister, had pushed for e-governance reforms, claiming it would curb corruption. These reforms were not implemented in an orderly manner, leading to the bureaucratic strangulation of the entire system and the alienation of a large section of the population. It is a common talk in Haryana on corruption that the work that used to be done for Rs 10 in the Congress government has to be paid Rs 20 to 30 for the same work in the BJP government.
