The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues. Meanwhile, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs on Friday informed that 16 Indian nationals serving in the Russian Army are missing. “A request has been made for the return of Indian citizens who served in the Russian military,” the ministry said. In addition, 12 Indians serving in the Russian Army have died so far.

96 Indians repatriated, 16 missing

Out of a total of 126 cases of Indian nationals serving in the Russian Army, 96 have returned to India and have been discharged from the Russian Armed Forces, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. There are still 18 Indian citizens in the Russian military, of which 16 are missing. Russia has put these people in the category of missing, Jaiswal said. We have demanded his release and return to India.

Death of an Indian citizen

Recently, an Indian national from Kerala was killed in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. 32-year-old Binil Babu from Kerala’s Thrissur, who was recruited in the Russian army, died in the fight against Ukraine. The Ministry of External Affairs has taken up the matter with the Russian government and sought early repatriation of other Indian nationals as well.

President Putin’s assurances

In August last year, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had assured that Indian citizens in the Russian military would be released from service. India has made its stand clear on the issue and it has been taken up with Russia.
