History
The legends found in the 18 Mahapuranas hold Lord Ganesha as the adopted son of Mother Lakshmi and the source of Mangal. Once Mother Lakshmi started to take pride in her brilliance. Lord Vishnu informed her she is still incomplete even if the entire planet loves her and she is desperately sought for. Lord Vishnu said that a woman is not complete until she becomes a mother when Mother Lakshmi questioned the cause for this incompleteness. Mother Lakshmi was empty since she lacked children. Goddess Lakshmi grew rather depressed hearing this. Goddess Parvati made her son Ganesh sit on her lap when she saw her depressed from childlessness. Lord Ganesha has been known as the adopted son of Goddess Lakshmi ever since. Goddess Lakshmi bestowed upon Ganeshji this boon: whomever does not honor Ganesha beside her, Lakshmi will never visit him. Lord Ganesha is therefore revered in the Diwali Puja alongside Goddess Lakshmi as an adopted son.
