According to the Vedic Panchang, this year the Chaturthi date of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month will start on 6 September at 3:01 pm and will end on 7 September at 5:37 pm. According to Udaya Tithi, the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi will be on 7 September, Saturday. On this day the idol of Ganesh ji will be established and fast will be observed.

Importance of Ganesh Chaturthi

The significance of Ganesh Chaturthi is very deep and wide. Lord Ganesha is called ‘Vighnaharta’, that is, he is the god who removes all obstacles. In Hinduism, the beginning of any auspicious work is considered incomplete without the worship of Ganesha. Be it marriage, housewarming, or the start of a new business, Ganesha is worshiped on every auspicious occasion.

On the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, offer Shami leaves and Durva to Ganpati Bappa during the worship. It is believed that this pleases the Lord and all the wishes of the devotee are fulfilled. During the worship, Aarti of Ganpati Bappa is performed and mantras are chanted. Chanting Ganesha’s famous mantra ‘Om Gan Ganpataye Namah’ is considered very auspicious. At the end of the worship, Lord Ganesha is prayed for happiness, peace, prosperity, and to remove all the obstacles in life.

The history of Ganesh Chaturthi is linked to ancient times. This festival became especially popular in Maharashtra, where in 1893 Bal Gangadhar Tilak started celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi as a public festival. He made it a medium to unite Indians against British rule. Since then this festival has become popular all over the country.

During the public celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi, huge idols of Ganesh ji are installed in big pandals. Crowds of devotees gather here daily and various cultural programs are also organized. On the last day, which is called ‘Anant Chaturdashi’, the idols of Ganesh ji are immersed with great pomp. This is called ‘Ganpati Visarjan’.
