New arrangement of NRI quota seats in MBBS admission; know what is special

NRI

Significant changes have been made recently in the quota reserved for NRI (non-resident Indian) students to seek admission to MBBS courses in medical colleges. It is necessary to know students desirous of medical education from these changes. Let us know what has happened and why these changes have been made.

What has changed in the NRI quota?

Previously, if a seat in the NRI quota was vacant, it would be converted into the seat of the general category in government colleges and the seat of the management category in private colleges. But now, following the new criteria, very few NRI quota seats will remain vacant.

Out of a total of 1,550 MBBS seats in 10 medical colleges in the state, 183 seats are reserved for NRI candidates. In previous years, a large number of NRI quota seats were left vacant, which would no longer be available to General Category students.

What are the new eligibility criteria?

The Medical Education and Research Department (DMER) has issued new criteria.

  • First preference: children of NRI or NRI related to Punjab
  • If seats remain vacant: NRI or NRI children belonging to any part of India
  • New: Students are eligible even when wards are created by other NRI nearby relatives (uncle-aunt, grandparents, maternal uncle).

What is the purpose of these changes?

DMER Secretary Priyank Bharati said that these changes have been made to attract more NRI students to the medical institutions of the state. Medical colleges, especially private institutions, had put pressure on the state government to provide more seats in this category. Because the course fee for the seat of NRI quota is quite high (about 93 lakh rupees), while in General Category it is very low (9.50 lakh–58.02 lakh rupees).

The main objective of these changes is to attract more and more NRI students and provide financial stability to medical colleges. In the sphere of medical education, this is a crucial step that can help both students and institutions.

Prepare with these new requirements in mind if you wish to pass the NEET exam and gain admission to a medical college.
