To deal with the problem of increasing spam calls and fake calls in India, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken a big step. TRAI’s new rule, which blacklists mobile numbers used for telemarketing or promotional calls for two years, will take effect from September 1, 2024.
The telecom sector is making efforts to prevent fraud
TRAI Chairman Dr. Ram Sharma said that this rule is part of the government’s efforts to prevent fraud in the telecom sector. He said, “Our aim is to free people from unwanted calls and messages. This new rule will greatly reduce the number of spam calls.” The new rule will blacklist a person’s personal number for two years if they use it for promotional calls. No calls or messages are allowed on the number. Under this rule, TRAI has also held telecom companies accountable.
Telecom companies will have to take the necessary action within 72 hours on complaints of fake calls
Anil Kumar, senior TRAI official, said, “If a customer complains about a fake call, the telecom company will have to resolve the issue within 72 hours and take necessary action. Should the company fail to address the issue, it will face a fine. Data from last year indicates that India receives about 30 crore spam calls every month. Financial services account for about 45% of these calls. We anticipate that this new TRAI rule will reduce the number of these calls by 70–80%. Telecom expert Ravi Sharma says, “This rule was very necessary. People were troubled by these unwanted calls on a daily basis. We now anticipate an improvement in the situation. But strict monitoring will be required for this.”
Report spam or fake calls immediately
TRAI has appealed to people to immediately report any kind of spam or fake calls. For this purpose, TRAI has issued a toll-free number, 1800-11-0420. You can also lodge complaints on TRAI’s website. We anticipate a significant decrease in fake call and fraud incidents in India’s telecom sector with the implementation of this new rule. According to TRAI, this will create a safe telecom environment for users.
This will reduce spam calls
Overall, TRAI has made a new rule to stop spam and fake calls. Starting September 1, 2024, TRAI will blacklist numbers making promotional calls for a period of two years. We expect this rule to reduce spam calls by 70-80%.
