Adani Power cuts Bangladesh supply by over 60%

After the political turmoil that removed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from office in August, Bangladesh has been facing many troubles one after the other. Amidst the ongoing political upheaval in Bangladesh, the situation in the neighbouring country does not seem to be normal.  Now the Indian company Adani Power has given another tension to Bangladesh. In fact, Adani Power has cut the supply of electricity to Bangladesh due to Bangladesh’s failure to pay dues of more than $ 800 million even after several reminders. According to the news, Adani Power(Adani Power crisis) has reduced the power supply to Bangladesh by up to 60 percent.

Let us tell you that Adani Power exports electricity to Dhaka from its dedicated 1,600 megawatt (MW) Godda plant in Jharkhand, India. It had reduced power supply to 700 MW-750 MW this month, from around 1,400 to 1,600 MW in early August. According to reports, power supply was further reduced to around 520 MW late Thursday night. It is worth noting that Adani Power had signed a 25-year power purchase agreement with BPDB in 2015.

New ‘Letter of Credit’ of Rs 1,450 crore issued

Needless to say, the situation in Bangladesh has started deteriorating after this move of Adani Power(Adani Power crisis). After this cut, Bangladesh Power Board has issued a new ‘Letter of Credit’ of about Rs 1,450 crore to Adani Power to maintain uninterrupted power supply. However, this move has come after Adani Power threatened to halve power supply and stop supply this week. Meanwhile, Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, an energy and power adviser in Bangladesh’s caretaker government, told Reuters on Thursday that “we are gradually clearing the dues and if anyone stops supply, we will take alternative measures. We will not become hostage to any power producer.
