India is gradually moving ahead towards becoming a world leader. It is a wonder of India’s subdued presence on the world stage that after World Yoga Day, the United Nations General Assembly has now approved to celebrate World Meditation Day. In fact, the United Nations General Assembly has accepted the proposal of co-sponsorship by India with everyone’s consent and declared 21 December as World Meditation Day. Let us tell you that along with India, Liechtenstein, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Andorra were members of the core group of countries that played a key role in unanimously passing the proposal titled ‘World Meditation Day‘ in the 193-member United Nations General Assembly on Friday.
India played an important role in adopting the resolution on World Meditation Day
According to the information received, a press release issued by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations said that “India’s important role in adopting the resolution on World Meditation Day is a testimony to its firm commitment to holistic human welfare and world leadership in this direction in line with our civilizational principle ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam‘.” Let us tell you that the proposal presented by Liechtenstein was also co-sponsored by Monaco, Mongolia, Bulgaria, Burundi, Dominican Republic, Iceland, Bangladesh, Luxembourg, Mauritius, Slovenia, Portugal and Morocco.
December 21 declared as World Meditation Day
India’s representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Parvataneni Harish posted on the social media platform X and said that “A day of comprehensive well-being and inner transformation! I am happy that India, along with other countries of the core group, guided the process of unanimous adoption of the resolution to declare December 21 as World Meditation Day in the United Nations General Assembly today.” He further said that “India’s leadership for overall human welfare is based on our civilizational principle – Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.”

World Meditation Day comes exactly six months after International Yoga Day
Harish also said that “December 21 is the day of winter solstice or Sankranti, which according to Indian tradition marks the beginning of Uttarayan which marks the beginning of an auspicious time of the year especially for inner contemplation and meditation.” He said that “It comes exactly six months after International Yoga Day. International Yoga Day is celebrated on 21 June.” Harish further said that “India played a leading role in declaring 21 June as International Yoga Day in 2014. In a decade it has become a global movement. Due to which common people all over the world are not only practicing yoga but are also making it a part of their daily life.
