18% of India’s population can’t read & write, 20% can’t add & subtract: NSS Report

Illiteracy statistics 2024

The Government of India has been very serious about education from the beginning. The reason is that Article 21 (A) of the Indian Constitution gives the right to free and compulsory education to children between six and fourteen years of age. Elementary education in India has been placed in the category of fundamental right. Despite all this, 18 percent of the country’s population is such that it is not able to read a simple sentence. Although many types of schemes are being run by the government, you will be surprised to know that in this country there are 20 percent of people who do not even know simple addition-subtraction.

The National Sample Survey report has made shocking revelations

We are not saying this, but the latest report of the National Sample Survey (NSS) is saying this. This report highlights many serious problems in the field of education, literacy and digital education in India. Actually, this has come to light in the latest report of the National Sample Survey (NSS). From this, it has been found that 18 percent of the population of India is such that it cannot read or write even a simple sentence. Not only this, there are 20 percent of people who do not even know simple addition and subtraction.

24 percent children do not have any interest in studies

According to the latest report of the National Sample Survey, the biggest reason for increasing illiteracy in India is children not going to school. You will be surprised to know that the reason for children not going to school is not financial constraints. Rather, the reason for them not going to school is their lack of interest in studies. In some cases, their parents are not even interested in sending them to school. According to the report, 24 percent of children do not go to school due to lack of interest in studies, and 21 percent of parents do not want their children to study. The survey also revealed that only 2 percent of children are those who have never seen a school. This problem exists somewhere or the other in other areas of India except the state of Kerala. Almost every child in Kerala goes to school.

18 percent people cannot read even a single line

According to the 2011 census of India, a total of 78 crore people in the country are literate, but among them there are 40 crore people who do not know how to write anything except their name. They do not know how to read or write anything other than their name. The National Sample Survey report stated that 81.6 percent of people above 15 years of age can easily read and write a simple sentence. This means that 18 percent of India’s population is such that it cannot read or write a simple sentence. According to the report, 25 percent of women have difficulty in reading and writing even simple sentences properly, while men are 11.7 percent.

20 percent people do not know simple addition and subtraction

The most surprising figure that came out in the survey is that 2 out of every 10 people do not know even simple addition and subtraction. The report said that 81.2 percent of people can do addition and subtraction, while 19 percent of people do not even know this. This includes 12 percent men and 25 percent women. Especially in villages, where the situation is even worse. 25 percent people in villages are unable to do addition and subtraction, while in urban areas there are 10 percent such people. This figure is even higher among women. Surprisingly, 30 percent rural women and 14 percent urban women are unaware of even the simple process of addition and subtraction.

43 percent people do not use the internet

You will be shocked to know that in this era of the internet, 43 percent of people are those who have not used the internet. If the survey is to be believed, then as per the data of three months ago, the use of the internet is also very limited in India. The big thing is that this figure is of the time when the availability of internet has increased in most areas and people are coming in contact with digital mediums.

Youth avoid taking education in science and technology

Not only this, the report of the National Sample Survey has also revealed that most people in India avoid taking education in science and technology. Out of the population above 21 years of age, only 34 percent are those who have been able to graduate in science or technology. In this too, women are behind men. Only 29 percent women and 37 percent men are those who have graduated in science or technology. This figure shows that there is a lack of education in these fields in India, which can affect technological development in future.

25 percent youth are away from studies, jobs and training

More than 25 percent of the youth in India are in such a situation where they are neither studying nor doing any kind of job and neither are they taking any kind of training. Out of these, 44 percent are women, who fall in this category. This figure shows youth unemployment and increasing reluctance towards education. Which can be dangerous for the future.

The literacy rate in villages is many times lower than in urban areas

If we talk about literacy, the literacy situation is different in urban and rural areas. The literacy rate in villages is many times lower than in urban areas. According to the survey, 22 percent of the people living in villages cannot read or write. Whereas, in urban areas this figure is around 10 percent. However, this figure is also a matter of concern, because most of the schools in the country are in rural areas. Of course, the survey data shows that there is still a lot of work to be done. There is a need to focus on education and skill development, especially among rural areas, women, and youth. If we want to move towards an empowered and prosperous society, then we have to give priority to these issues.
