After the induction of the second nuclear-powered submarine, INS Arighat, in the Navy, India is now engaged in expanding the underwater fighter fleet. The Navy’s biggest focus is on setting up advanced facilities for strong communication between long-range patrol submarines and other ships. The Very Low-Frequency Communication Station (VLF), set up at Vikarabad in Telangana, will be inaugurated by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on October 15. According to media reports, this strategically important VLF facility will be fully operational in about two years. After which the Navy will be able to provide 24-hour encrypted communication connectivity to its submarines underwater.
This is how VLAF works
According to defense sources, VLFs are a special kind of radio waves that operate in the frequency band of 3 to 30 kHz. This frequency travels easily to a certain depth inside the sea. Only a few countries have this technology. The VLF facility will help in the ‘command and control’ of nuclear submarines that remain underwater for long periods. After the advent of this technology, it will be easier to keep an eye on the intrusion.

Next year, another powerful submarine will be added to the fleet
The Navy has been operating a VLF station at Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu since 1990, though the technology is outdated now. The new VLF station being built in Vikarabad is quite advanced. It will be able to maintain 24-hour communication with diesel and electric as well as nuclear submarines. With the help of this technology, India will be able to keep a close watch on the intrusion of China’s navy in the Indian Ocean region and give a tough fight.
The Navy is working on plans to induct a third submarine into its fleet by next year in the form of INS Aridhaman. A fourth submarine is also being built under the secret Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project. The submarine will have pressurized light-water reactors of up to 190 MW.
