BJP in Haryana: Vocal for local, RSS support, and the Jat-non-Jat divide helped them win

In Haryana, the BJP has done what no political party has been able to do so far. The BJP won the elections with a thumping majority. This is the first time in the 58-year history of Haryana that a party has won for the third time in a row. While political experts are surprised by this huge victory of the BJP, Congress is also seen as zero. Amidst all the claims of defeat, everyone wants to know how the BJP reversed the game out of hand. What were these factors? This is the third time the BJP has won the elections in Haryana.

Before and during the elections, there was only talk everywhere that the BJP government was going and the Congress was coming back to power. Amid these discussions and claims, the BJP entered the electoral fray with a well-crafted strategy and focused on the villages. During the election campaign, the party raised Vocal for Local and local issues along with strengthening its vote base. In this campaign, the RSS helped the BJP reach the threshold of victory. RSS workers played an active role at the grassroots level to spread the message of corruption-free government, employment opportunities, beneficial schemes for farmers, and issues related to national interest. With this, the silent voters who left the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections also returned to the BJP.

The Congress was in a shambles during the elections. Senior leaders like Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Kumari Selja were busy making a bid for the chief minister’s post instead of campaigning. The same is the case with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The Congress has ruled out an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party in Haryana. At that time, party leaders claimed, When we are winning elections alone, why ally? This has dented the Congress’s confidence. The AAP made inroads into the Congress vote bank in many seats and acted as a panacea for the BJP.

The Congress was fighting the Haryana elections on the issues of employment, inflation, and jawans-kisan-pehalwan, but the BJP managed to bring this election on the issue of Jats and non-Jats. The BJP managed to convince the voters that, if the Congress won, Bhupinder Hooda would become the chief minister and non-Jats would not be heard. This brought non-Jat voters into the BJP’s fold and was a major reason for the Congress’s defeat.
