The new number 1 State of the nation: Bihar overtakes Rajasthan and Telangana

Bihar, which has always been in the discussion politically, is now in the discussion about a new record. Bihar has achieved the first position in the country in terms of admitting patients to government hospitals and giving free medicines along with their treatment for OPD. Tamil Nadu stands second and Maharashtra in third place. This was revealed in the monthly ranking related to drug distribution and use released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare operates the Drug and Vaccine Distribution Management System in 24 states of the country. The supply of medicines to all hospitals is managed through the portal itself. They are reviewed every month on 11 parameters, from drug stock to distribution. According to the information released by the Health Department, Bihar is in the first position in the entire country with 77.22 percent marks in all 11 parameters, including free medicine distribution in September. Rajasthan with 76.91 percent and Telangana with 69.14 percent stood second and third, respectively.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had initiated health reforms in government hospitals in 2005-06 during his first term itself. Under this, in 2006, the Government of Bihar had implemented schemes related to the National Rural Health Mission for health care in villages. Under this scheme, on the recommendation of the central government, the Bihar government started the free medicine distribution scheme inside all government hospitals in the year 2011. Under this scheme, free medicines are provided to the patients in all government hospitals, including primary health centers, district hospitals, and medical college hospitals at the gram panchayat level.

There are currently 612 medicines on the list of essential medicines of the Bihar government, all of which are given free of charge. Drug procurement was centralized to ensure the availability of these drugs. The Union Health Department has implemented the Real Time Drug Inventory Management System (DVDMS) to check the availability and distribution of drugs at these centers.
