Junior doctors in West Bengal have been protesting against the state government’s handling of the rape and murder of a female doctor. Announcing their agitation, the junior doctors have stopped their work indefinitely from today. The junior doctors accused the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal of reneging on promises and said many of their demands, including ensuring their safety in hospitals, have not been met so far. Due to this, they are forced to go on strike again.
Doctors accuse the Mamata government of betraying them
On August 9, a woman doctor was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The junior doctors had gone on strike, demanding justice and security. The junior doctors of the state returned to work on September 21 after 42 days of protest when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee assured them of fulfilling all demands. However, now doctors are accusing the Mamata government of reneging on promises.
The state government has not fulfilled our demands
The agitating junior doctors told the media that the state government had given a guarantee to fulfill our demands related to safety and security, but so far there has been no positive approach from the state government. “We started the work of medical emergency after getting the guarantee of fulfillment of demands, but no effort is being made to fulfill the promises made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee,” the doctors said. On the contrary, we are still being attacked. As a result, we are now left with no option but to completely stop work and return to the strike.”
“Unless the state government takes clear action on these demands, junior doctors in government hospitals will not resume work,” the junior doctors said. “The biggest sufferers of this strike will be the poor people who approach government hospitals when they fall sick.
