Bengal Women’s Safety Under Scrutiny After Tragic Incident

Bengal

Recently, an incident took place at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata which shook the whole country. This incident of rape and murder of a junior doctor once again brought the issue of women’s safety to the fore. This incident was so horrific that it shook not only the common people but also the political corridors. Women’s safety in Bengal has once again become a topic of discussion. This time the matter is not limited to just one incident, but has also become the reason for a confrontation between the state and central government. Let us know what the whole matter is and why it is so heated.

Mamata Banerjee’s tough stand after the incident

After this incident, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took a tough stand. She wrote two letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding strict laws on crimes against women. Mamata said in her letters that there should be a provision for strict punishment for heinous crimes like rape and murder. Also, she demanded a time-bound system to dispose of these cases quickly.

Women’s Safety: State vs Centre

In response to Mamata Banerjee’s letters, Union Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi hit back. She said that the information given by Mamata is factually incorrect. Annapurna Devi said that the status of Fast Track Special Courts (FTSC) and special POCSO courts in West Bengal is completely different from Mamata Banerjee’s claims. The Union Minister said that “According to the information received from the Calcutta High Court, West Bengal has established 88 Fast Track Courts (FTC), but these are different from the Fast Track Special Courts (FTSC) under the Central Government’s scheme. He also said that 48,600 cases of rape and POCSO are pending in the state, yet the state government has not yet started additional 11 FTSCs.”

Reaction of political parties

Political parties have also given their respective reactions in this whole matter. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused Mamata Banerjee of not taking enough steps for women’s safety in her state. BJP co-in-charge of West Bengal Amit Malviya said that Mamata Banerjee has failed to ensure strict compliance of existing rules and laws for the safety of women and girls. On the other hand, Mamata Banerjee’s party Trinamool Congress has accused the BJP of politicizing the issue. The party says that the BJP wants to take political advantage by taking advantage of the tragic incident of the junior doctor.

Status of investigation

Meanwhile, the investigation into the incident at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata is going on at a fast pace. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested the main suspect Sanjay Roy. Sanjay Roy was seen in CCTV outside the seminar room of the hospital where the body of the junior doctor was found. Also, former principal of the college Sandeep Ghosh is also being investigated.

Women’s safety

One thing is clear from this whole matter that women’s safety is not just an issue of the government or law and order. It is the responsibility of all of us. We have to be alert towards the safety of women around us. Also, we have to create an environment in the society where women can live their lives without any fear.
