The Mamata government, which is surrounded from all sides in the case of the gruesome incident with a junior doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, has now started the politics of letters. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written a second letter to Prime Minister Modi, demanding a central law and strict punishment for heinous crimes like rape and murder after rape.
Expressed Concern
Expressing concern over not receiving a reply to her first letter, Mamata Banerjee wrote in her second letter that you will remember my letter number 44-CM dated August 22, 2024, which talked about the need to make a strict central law on rape incidents and give the harshest punishment to the culprits of such crimes. But despite being such a sensitive issue, no response was received from your side.
Reply from Women and Child Development Minister
Mamata Banerjee further wrote that “However, a reply has come from the Minister of Women and Child Development, which does not properly reflect the seriousness of the issue raised in the letter.” She further wrote that “I believe that while sending this general reply, the seriousness of the subject and its relevance to the society has not been appreciated enough. Not only this, I would also like to mention some steps already taken by our state government in this area, which have been ignored in the reply.”
Provision for Disposal of Cases
Mamata Banerjee said that “I would like to reiterate and request that consider strict central law and stringent punishment on heinous crimes like rape/rape and murder. It should have mandatory provision for disposal of cases within a specific time limit by the trial court. I hope that this matter will get your attention in the larger interest of our society.”
It is worth noting that this demand for strict laws by Mamata Banerjee has come after the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital on August 9.
