Successful launch of the country’s 1st reusable rocket.

RHUMI

India has made another major leap in the field of space. On 24 August 2024, the country’s first reusable hybrid rocket, ‘RHUMI-1’ was successfully launched from Thiruvidandhai near Chennai. It is a historical moment that takes India into a new era in space technology.

What is RHUMI Rocket?

  • The full name of RHUMI is Reusable Hybrid Upper-stage Miniature. It is a unique rocket that combines two types of technology:
  • Reusable: This means that this rocket can be used repeatedly. It is good for the environment and also reduces costs.
  • Hybrid: This rocket uses both solid and liquid fuels. This increases its functionality.

Special things of RHUMI-1,

  • Safe and Environmentally Friendly: The RHUMI rocket is 100% pyrotechnic-free and does not have TNT at all. This means that it is very safe and does not harm the environment.
  • Smart technology: This rocket has a special kind of electric parachute system. This system helps to bring the rocket back safely.
  • Carrier of small satellites: RHUMI-1 carried 3 cube satellites and 50 pico satellites with it. These small satellites will gather important data on climate change.
  • Mobile Launcher: This rocket was released from a mobile launcher. This means that it can be launched from any place.

Importance of the RHUMI mission,

  • Indigenous technology: This rocket is made entirely in India. This reflects our scientific potential.
  • Cost Reduction: Being reusable, RHUMI can significantly reduce the cost of rocket space missions.
  • Environmental protection: This technology will reduce space waste and have less impact on the environment.
  • Climate Studies: Satellites taken by RHUMI will provide important information on global warming and climate change.

The team behind the RHUMI mission,

This important mission is led by Anand Megalingham, founder of Space Zone India. He was succeeded by former director of ISRO Satellite Center (ISAC), Dr. Myleswamy Annadurai, who is getting guidance.

Space Zone India is a young startup based in Chennai. This company is working on developing low-cost space solutions. The RHUMI rocket has been built by Space Zone India and Martin Group together.
