Who was Khatu Shyam Ji?
According to the scriptures, Shri Khatu Shyam Ji is linked to the Mahabharata period. He was the grandson of Pandu’s son Bhima and was considered extremely powerful. According to mythological beliefs, when the Pandavas were traveling from one forest to another to save their lives, Bhima encountered Hidimba. Hidimba gave birth to a son named Ghatotkach. Later, Ghatotkach had a son, whose name was Barbarik. This barbarik later became famous as Khatu Shyam.

The blessing given by Lord Krishna to Khatu Shyam Ji was a reward for his devotion, affection, and deeds. This blessings can be divided into two major parts:

The story of Lord Krishna and Khatu Shyam Ji
Lord Krishna blessed Khatu Shyam Ji with immense power and respect and blessed him to be worshiped by his name in Kaliyuga. Barbarik, who used to overpower everyone with his amazing power and ability, expressed his desire to join the Mahabharata war. He asked Shri Krishna on which side he should fight, to which Shri Krishna replied that he should fight on the side that would lose because Shri Krishna knew the result of the war in advance.
After this, Shri Krishna demanded his donation from Barbarik and asked for his head. Barbarik immediately donated his head and prayed to Shri Krishna to watch the entire Mahabharata war. Shri Krishna placed his head on a high hill so that he could watch the war completely. When the Pandavas won, everyone started quarreling with each other as to who should get the credit for the victory. Barbarik said that the credit for the victory should go to Shri Krishna. Happy with this, Shri Krishna blessed Barbarik to be worshiped as Khatu Shyam Ji in Kaliyuga.

The worship of Khatu Shyam Ji is still highly popular among the devotees. Especially every year, Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month is celebrated as the birth anniversary of ‘Shyam Baba’. On this day, devotees go to Khatu temple and worship and especially offer red-colored clothes and gifts. Devotees believe that by worshiping on this day, all their wishes are fulfilled and happiness and prosperity come in life.
