Raksha Bandhan: Historic Tales of Brotherly Love and Protection

Raksha Bandhan

The festival of Raksha Bandhan is considered a symbol of the deep and pure love between brother and sister. On this day, the sister ties a Rakhi on her brother’s wrist.

It is not just a thread but a responsibility to protect the sister, which is the duty of every brother to fulfill. By the way, this festival has been celebrated for centuries. Not only is it being celebrated, but there are also many popular stories about it, like when sisters sent Rakhi to their brothers and asked for help, and the brothers helped.

As we are all well aware of this story, Queen Karnavati had sent Rakhi to Humayun to save Chittorgarh from Bahadur Shah’s attack. On receiving the Rakhi, Humayun marched towards Chittorgarh with his army. It is a different matter that before his arrival, Queen Karnavati had committed Jauhar along with other women. Later, a fierce war took place between Humayun and Bahadur Shah, and Bahadur Shah was badly defeated.

When Alexander faced King Porus

Well, we are all aware of this story. But do you know that this one Rakhi also saved the life of Alexander the Great, who was out to conquer the world? Oh yes, the same Alexander the Great, whom the world knows as Alexander. Actually, he was a brave warrior of the Greek or Macedonian Empire, and in 356 BC, he set out with the dream of conquering the world. After waving the flag of his victory in many areas like Iran, Phoenicia, Mesopotamia, and Egypt, he reached the Indian subcontinent, where he faced the great King Porus.

Then, a fierce war took place between the two on the banks of the Jhelum and Chenab rivers. It is also said that Alexander had a total of 50 thousand soldiers, but they were helpless in front of the brave army of King Porus. Meanwhile, after a few days, Alexander’s wife came to know that King Porus is a great and brave king. He can kill Alexander at any time; she immediately sent a Rakhi to King Porus and requested him to spare Alexander’s life. The great king Porus also did not attack Alexander lethally, keeping the honor of Rakhi. Otherwise, Alexander’s torso would have been cut off by one blow of Porus.

Historians do not have a single opinion about the result of the war. It was Rakhi that spared Alexander’s life; otherwise, history would have been different. Well, as far as the result of the war is concerned, different arguments are given by historians about its result.

By the way, in history it is known as the Battle of the Hadespes. Greek historians call Alexander victorious in this war. While others deny this. But the truth is that Alexander had surrendered in this war.
