Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati’s name comes among those great saints who dedicated their entire lives to social service, protection of religion, and upliftment of the tribal community. Born in 1924 in the Kandhamal district of Odisha, Swamiji showed an inclination towards sadhana and spirituality from the very beginning.
Early life and education
Swami Lakshmanananda was born into a Brahmin family. He completed his early education in the village itself, but his focus was always on spirituality. He started coming in the company of Sadhus at a young age and gradually thought of taking sanyaas.
Sanyaas and social service
Swamiji took sanyas in his youth and did rigorous penance in the Himalayas. After returning from there, he chose Kandhamal district of Odisha as his karmabhoomi. He went among the tribal and backward communities and propagated education, health, and religious education. Understanding the importance of education, Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati established many schools and ashrams, where not only education was imparted, but cultural and religious awareness was also spread.
Dharma Raksha and opposition to conversion
Swami Lakshmanananda campaigned against religious conversion in the tribal areas of Odisha. He tried to keep the tribals connected to their original culture and religion. He felt that the religious conversion being done by foreign missionaries was harmful to the local culture and society. In protest against this, he did the work of Dharma Jagran and constantly tried to save Hinduism.
Attacks on life and sacrifice
Thousands of people became his followers, influenced by the works of Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati. But there were also people dissatisfied with his Dharma Raksha work. On 23 August 2008, on the day of Janmashtami, he was attacked by unknown assailants in his ashram in Kandhamal district, killing him and his four disciples. This incident caused grief and outrage across the country.
