But did this question ever arise in your mind that why the date of 15th August 1947 was chosen to liberate the country? If not, then let us tell you the interesting story related to Independence Day, because of which the British chose the date of 15th August to liberate India.
India was supposed to get independence on 30th June 1948.
According to the certified documents, the British government wanted to liberate India on 30th June 1948, but the issue of partition of India and Pakistan had become big. The possibility of communal conflict between Hindus and Muslims inside the country had started increasing; riots had also started in many places. The British felt that if there was a delay, there could be more bloodshed. Therefore, the last Viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten, after consultation with Nehru and Jinnah, decided to liberate India on 15 August 1947. For this, Mountbatten presented the Indian Independence Bill in the British House of Commons on 4 July 1947. The British Parliament immediately approved this bill, and India was declared free on 15 August 1947.
Why was 15 August chosen?
Actually, the date of 15 August was very special for Viceroy Lord Mountbatten. On this date, 15 August 1945, during the Second World War, the Japanese Army surrendered to the British, accepting defeat. Lord Mountbatten was the commander of the Allied Force, in front of which the British Army surrendered. Mountbatten got the full credit for this surrender of Japan. Mountbatten considered 15 August as the best day of his life. That is why he chose 15 August to liberate India. Due to which India became independent about 10 months before the predetermined date of independence.
