Hindu Community Targeted in Bangladesh: UN Demands Action

Hindu Community Targeted in Bangladesh

The UN has strongly denounced the attacks on Hindus and other minority groups in Bangladesh. While Mohammed Yunus has assumed temporary government, a spokesman for UN chief Antonio Guterres has underlined the urgency of stopping the bloodshed.

Attacks against Bangladesh’s Hindus have led to UN condemnation of bloodshed.

Over the past few weeks, attacks on the Hindu community and other smaller groups in Bangladesh have attracted international notice. On August 9, 2024, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s spokesman, Farhan Haq, made it quite evident that the UN opposes any kind of racist attack or violence. Farhan Haq stated that the UN is closely monitoring the situation and taking action to put an end to the ongoing violence in Bangladesh.

Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and the ongoing cycle of violence:

The Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, left her job on August 5, 2024, and turned to India. Violence broke out in the nation following his resignation, with attacks on Hindu temples, businesses, and residences. Furthermore, at least two Hindu leaders affiliated with Hasina’s party, the Awami League, were slain.

On August 8, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took oath as head of Bangladesh’s interim government. The UN stated that it hoped the incoming government would restore peace to the country and include everyone. Any hope for peace is a wonderful thing.

The importance of the UN

Once sworn in, Mohammad Yunus assumed leadership of the temporary administration. Their most important task is to bring peace to the nation and organize fair elections. President Mohammad Shahabuddin swore in the 84-year-old Yunus as the Chief Adviser, a status akin to that of the Prime Minister. Although several party officials, judges, and other dignitaries attended the event, none of Hasina’s party officials were there.

Yunus’s government comprises sixteen members, the majority of whom have ties to the common people. The ministers were selected based on negotiations involving military officials, members of the public, and student leaders. Concurrently, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Yunus and voiced hope that Bangladesh’s situation will normalize shortly.

Bangladesh’s situation:

The state of affairs in Bangladesh has deteriorated due to violent incidents. The bloodshed has targeted Hindus in 45 districts, leading many of them to flee to India in search of safety. The UN has been urged to step in and look into the case, given its gravity.

Farhan Haq said the UN will take into account the kind of official proposal the newly elected administration makes. Nonetheless, UN Local Coordinator Gwyn Lewis participated in the swearing-in event and has been vigilant in making sure the change on the ground is peaceful.
