New Delhi, November 4, 2026: The Delhi government’s Food Safety Department has seized and destroyed approximately 7,000 kg of unhygienic and foul-smelling khoya during a major inspection at Mori Gate Khoya Market ahead of Diwali. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the market on November 3 to review the operation and directed officials to take strict action against food adulteration.
7,000 Kg of Khoya Destroyed at Mori Gate
The Food Safety Department conducted an extensive inspection at the wholesale khoya market in Mori Gate, one of Delhi’s important dairy-product trading centres.
Officials identified large quantities of khoya that appeared unhygienic, foul-smelling or potentially adulterated.
Approximately 7,000 kg of suspicious khoya was seized and destroyed to prevent the products from reaching consumers during the festive season.
35 Out of 44 Samples Fail Preliminary Tests
During the operation, officials collected 44 surveillance samples from traders operating in the market.
The samples were examined using the department’s Food Safety on Wheels mobile testing laboratory.
According to officials, 35 samples failed preliminary screening, raising concerns about the quality and safety of the products being sold.
Two additional enforcement samples were sent to a laboratory for detailed examination.
Milk Powder and Vanaspati Detected in Initial Screening
Preliminary tests indicated the possible presence of milk powder, vanaspati and binding substances in some of the suspected products.
Officials said further laboratory testing would help determine whether the samples violated food safety standards.
The initial findings do not establish that every seized product contained prohibited substances, and detailed test results are still awaited.
CM Rekha Gupta Inspects Food Safety Operation
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta personally visited Mori Gate Khoya Market to inspect the enforcement drive.
She directed officials to ensure that suspicious food products were removed from the supply chain before reaching customers.
Gupta said protecting public health was a priority and warned that people involved in food adulteration would face strict legal action.
More Than 10,000 Kg of Khoya Destroyed in Recent Drives
The latest operation was the department’s fourth major inspection at Mori Gate Khoya Market.
According to official figures, the department previously destroyed:
- September 4: 2,830 kg of khoya
- September 8: 610 kg of khoya
- October 23: 520 kg of khoya
- November 3: Approximately 7,000 kg of khoya
The department reported that the total quantity destroyed during these operations had reached approximately 10,660 kg.
Delhi Government Intensifies Food Inspections
Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh chaired a review meeting with Food Safety Department officials on November 3.
He instructed authorities to strengthen inspections across the capital and maintain continuous monitoring of food businesses.
Special attention will be given to dairy establishments, sweet manufacturers, wholesale markets, warehouses and food-processing facilities.
Paneer, Ghee and Sweets Also Under Watch
Officials have identified several products requiring additional scrutiny during the festive season.
These include khoya, paneer, chhena, sweets, namkeen, ghee, edible oils and dry fruits.
Over the preceding two months, the department collected 429 food samples during its enforcement and surveillance activities.
Officials also reported that 19 samples collected during special checks against ghee adulteration were found unsafe.
Consumers Advised to Check Food Quality
With demand for sweets and dairy products increasing during Diwali, consumers are encouraged to purchase products from reputable and properly licensed sellers.
Buyers should avoid products with unusual smells, visible contamination, poor storage conditions or suspicious packaging.
Consumers can report suspected food adulteration to the relevant food safety authorities.
Food Safety Campaign to Continue Beyond Diwali
The Delhi government has announced that inspections will continue beyond the festive season.
Authorities said enforcement teams would maintain year-round surveillance to identify unsafe products and take action against businesses violating food safety regulations.
The latest operation highlights the importance of regular inspections and laboratory testing in protecting consumers from potentially unsafe food products.
