Delhi University Professor Sent on Leave After Student Files Sexual Harassment Complaint

New Delhi, November 4, 2026: A 55-year-old assistant professor at Delhi University’s Daulat Ram College has been placed on leave and issued a show-cause notice following a female student’s complaint alleging sexual harassment and assault. The college administration has initiated an internal inquiry into the allegations.

Student Files Complaint Against Assistant Professor

According to reports, the student filed her complaint on October 29, two days after an alleged incident on the college premises.

The complaint reportedly includes allegations of sexual harassment, inappropriate conduct, coercion and molestation.

The student also alleged that the professor had been sending her inappropriate messages for approximately three months.

College Places Professor on Leave

Following the complaint, the college administration placed the assistant professor on leave and issued a show-cause notice seeking his explanation.

Daulat Ram College Vice Principal Priti Malhotra confirmed that an inquiry had been initiated and that the matter was being examined by the college’s internal committee.

She also confirmed that the professor was not attending college while the proceedings continued.

Professor Denies All Allegations

The assistant professor has rejected the allegations, describing them as false and baseless.

He claimed that he was being falsely implicated and harassed, and said he had recently learned about the complaint.

The professor also confirmed receiving the show-cause notice and said he would submit his response after seeking legal advice.

Internal Committee Begins Investigation

The college’s Internal Complaints Committee is responsible for examining complaints of sexual harassment involving students and staff.

The committee is expected to review the allegations, relevant evidence and responses from the individuals involved before making recommendations.

The inquiry remains ongoing, and no final finding of misconduct has been announced.

University Procedures Protect Students

Higher educational institutions in India are required to maintain mechanisms for addressing sexual harassment complaints.

The University Grants Commission’s 2015 regulations provide a framework for preventing sexual harassment and handling complaints in colleges and universities.

These procedures are intended to ensure confidentiality, fair investigation and appropriate action when misconduct is established.

Case Raises Concerns Over Campus Safety

The allegations have brought renewed attention to student safety and accountability within higher educational institutions.

Effective complaint-handling procedures are essential to ensuring that students can report alleged misconduct without fear of retaliation.

At the same time, investigations must provide a fair opportunity for all parties to present their accounts.

Further Action Depends on Inquiry Findings

The assistant professor will remain on leave while the college examines the complaint, although the duration of the leave has not been specified.

Any further disciplinary action will depend on the findings of the investigation and applicable institutional procedures.

As of November 4, the allegations remain under investigation, and the college has not announced a final decision.
