Former India Hockey Captain Pargat Singh Appointed Punjab Congress President, Replacing Amarinder Singh Raja Warring

CHANDIGARH, October 3: The Congress has appointed former India hockey captain and Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), replacing Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. The appointment takes effect immediately as the party reorganises its Punjab unit ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

Pargat Singh Takes Charge of Punjab Congress

The Congress formally named Pargat Singh as the new state unit president after Warring stepped down.

The party’s current list of Pradesh Congress Committee presidents now identifies Pargat Singh as the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.

Raja Warring Steps Down

Warring had headed the Punjab Congress since April 2022.

He met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi before submitting his resignation, bringing his more than four-year tenure as PPCC chief to an end.

Former Hockey Captain Enters Bigger Political Role

Before entering politics, Pargat Singh had a prominent international hockey career and captained India at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

He was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1989 and Padma Shri in 1998 for his contribution to Indian sport.

Three-Time MLA From Jalandhar Cantonment

Pargat Singh is a three-time MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment.

He first won the constituency in 2012 on a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket before joining the Congress and retaining the seat in the 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections.

Previously Served as Punjab Cabinet Minister

Pargat Singh served as a Cabinet minister in the Charanjit Singh Channi government from September 2021 to March 2022.

He has also held organisational responsibilities within the Punjab Congress, including serving as general secretary of the state unit.

Leadership Change Follows Party Consultations

The appointment follows consultations within the Congress over the functioning and leadership of its Punjab organisation.

Punjab affairs in-charge Sachin Pilot had held discussions with state leaders before the leadership transition was finalised.

Focus Shifts to 2027 Assembly Elections

Pargat Singh will now lead the Punjab Congress organisation as the party prepares for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

His immediate responsibilities include managing the state party structure and coordinating with senior Congress leaders during the pre-election period.
