Heavy Rain, Floods and Landslides Kill 15 in India as Rivers Rise

LUCKNOW, September 27: Heavy rain, thunderstorms and rising river levels have triggered widespread disruption across parts of India, with at least 15 people killed in Uttar Pradesh over the past 48 hours, according to state authorities. The severe weather has damaged homes, affected crops and pushed several major rivers above danger levels.

The latest spell of intense rain has affected dozens of districts across Uttar Pradesh, while the Central Water Commission has also reported severe flood conditions at monitoring stations across several states.

15 Dead, Five Injured in Uttar Pradesh

Authorities said 15 people were killed and five others injured in rain-related incidents across Uttar Pradesh during the past 48 hours.

The severe weather also damaged 117 houses, while strong winds, thunderstorms and waterlogging affected normal life in several districts.

Casualties were reported from multiple districts, including Lakhimpur Kheri, Ayodhya, Amethi, Bahraich, Banda, Barabanki, Basti, Fatehpur, Hamirpur, Hardoi and Kanpur Nagar.

63 Districts Record Above-Normal Rainfall

The scale of the rainfall has been unusually high.

According to Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod, 63 of the state’s 75 districts recorded above-normal rainfall, while the state received around 19 times its normal rainfall during a 24-hour period.

Lucknow, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Shravasti and Etawah were among several areas affected by continuous heavy rainfall and waterlogging.

Houses and Crops Damaged

Heavy rain and strong winds have also caused significant damage to property and agriculture.

At least 117 houses were damaged, according to officials, while standing crops including paddy, sugarcane and vegetables were affected in rural areas.

Waterlogging disrupted roads and daily movement in several cities, while authorities increased preparedness in vulnerable districts.

Major Rivers Rise Above Danger Levels

Flood concerns have increased as water levels in several rivers continue to rise.

According to the Central Water Commission, 30 river-monitoring stations across seven states were in a “severe situation,” meaning water levels were between designated danger marks and previous highest flood levels.

Major rivers including the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati and Narmada were reported above danger levels at some monitoring stations.

The rising river levels have increased concerns over flooding in low-lying and riverbank areas.

Authorities Put Districts on High Alert

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed district magistrates in affected areas to remain on high alert and ensure immediate relief and assistance for residents impacted by the rainfall.

Emergency and relief teams have been instructed to monitor vulnerable locations, while local administrations are watching river levels and areas considered at risk of flash floods.

Weather Alerts Issued Across Uttar Pradesh

The Meteorological Department has issued further weather warnings as unstable conditions continue.

An Orange Alert has been issued for western Uttar Pradesh, while a Yellow Alert is in place for eastern Uttar Pradesh, according to Akashvani News.

Continued rainfall could worsen waterlogging and increase the risk of flash floods in vulnerable areas.

Severe Weather Also Hits Nepal

The same weather system has also caused severe damage in neighbouring Nepal.

Reuters reported that four people, including three children and a woman, were killed in a landslide in Baglung district after their house was buried while they were sleeping.

Ten workers were also reported missing after an avalanche buried a base camp near Himlung Himal in northern Nepal.

Authorities in Nepal have warned of possible flash floods in 49 of the country’s 77 districts as rivers and tributaries continue to rise.

Flood Risk Remains High

With rainfall continuing in several areas and major rivers remaining above danger levels, authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

The immediate focus remains on rescue operations, relief for affected families, restoration of damaged infrastructure and preventing further casualties in vulnerable areas.

Residents in flood-prone districts have been advised to follow local administration alerts and avoid rivers, waterlogged roads and unstable structures during periods of intense rainfall.
