AMMAN, September 9: Iran’s Revolutionary Guard launched ballistic missiles at a US-used military base in Jordan and said it attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz, sharply escalating its confrontation with Washington after US forces destroyed five Iranian oil tankers.
Iran Targets US Base in Jordan
Iran said it targeted a base near Al Azraq used by American forces. Jordan said its air defences intercepted 18 of 20 missiles, while two landed in unpopulated areas. No casualties were reported, and a US official said all American personnel were accounted for.
10 Ships Targeted Near Hormuz
The IRGC also claimed attacks on two US vessels and eight oil tankers attempting to cross what Tehran described as a prohibited and unsafe area of the Strait of Hormuz.
Shipping through the critical energy route remains heavily disrupted, with only six commodity vessels recorded crossing the strait on Tuesday, below the recent average.
US Destroyed Five Iranian Oil Tankers
The attacks followed US strikes that destroyed five Iranian crude-oil tankers. Washington said the vessels were linked to a network financing Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and that the action followed attempted Iranian missile attacks on a US Navy warship.
Oil Crosses $100 Amid Escalation
The renewed fighting has intensified fears of disruption to Middle Eastern energy supplies. Brent crude moved above $100 per barrel on Wednesday, adding to concerns over global inflation and energy security.
The latest exchange marks one of the sharpest escalations in recent weeks and puts renewed pressure on shipping and energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
