NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has sought responses from the Central government and National Testing Agency (NTA) on a petition challenging the decision to re-conduct the UGC-NET June 2026 examination for the English subject.
Justice Jasmeet Singh issued notice on a petition filed by candidates who had appeared in the original English examination.
Petition Challenges August 16 Re-Test Notice
The petition seeks quashing of the August 16 NTA public notice directing that the UGC-NET June 2026 English examination be conducted again.
The candidates have argued that the decision was taken without adequately disclosing the material forming its basis and without following procedures prescribed in the examination Information Bulletin.
They have described the decision as arbitrary, unreasonable and procedurally unfair.
Candidates Want Original Results Processed
The petitioners have also sought directions for the authorities to process or declare the results of the examination already conducted.
They have asked that the usual answer-key challenge and expert-review process be followed, including correction of defective questions or answers wherever necessary.
Court Also Raises Fee Refund Issue
The High Court has directed the authorities to take a decision regarding the refund of examination fees connected with the re-conducted paper.
The petitioners have argued that if the re-test is ultimately allowed to proceed, affected candidates should not have to pay an additional examination fee.
English Re-Test Scheduled for September 9
NTA has scheduled the English and Commerce re-examinations for September 9, while the Sociology paper is scheduled to be held again on September 10.
The agency decided to re-conduct these papers after receiving complaints regarding errors in the original examinations.
Committee Found Multiple Errors
According to NTA, a committee examining the complaints identified several problems in the affected question papers.
These included factual errors, typographical mistakes, translation issues, incorrect names and book titles, grammatical problems and repetition of previously asked questions.
Next Hearing on October 6
The Delhi High Court has listed the matter for further hearing on October 6.
Until then, the Centre and NTA are expected to place their responses before the court on the challenge to the English re-examination and the issue of fee refunds.
