NEW DELHI, September 3: The India Meteorological Department has issued widespread weather warnings for Thursday as heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are expected across several parts of the country amid an active monsoon spell.
Weather warnings cover large parts of northern, central, eastern and northeastern India, with particularly intense rainfall expected at isolated locations.
Extremely Heavy Rain Risk in Madhya Pradesh
One of the strongest warnings is for East Madhya Pradesh, where IMD has forecast isolated extremely heavy rainfall on September 3.
Heavy rainfall is also expected in parts of West Madhya Pradesh, while thunderstorms and lightning are likely across the state.
Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh are also expected to experience significant rainfall activity today.
Delhi, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh Under Rain Alert
IMD has forecast widespread rainfall over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi today, with isolated heavy rain possible.
Heavy rainfall warnings are also in place for Punjab and East Uttar Pradesh, while thunderstorms and lightning may occur at isolated places across Uttar Pradesh.
Delhi-NCR is expected to remain generally cloudy with spells of rain during the day.
Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh Face Heavy Rain
The Himalayan states remain vulnerable as the monsoon continues.
Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are under heavy-rain warnings today, with thunderstorms and lightning also possible in Uttarakhand.
Authorities and residents in hill areas have been advised to remain alert because prolonged rainfall can increase the risk of landslides, flash floods and disruption on mountain roads.
Very Heavy Rain Forecast for Bengal and Sikkim
IMD’s September 3 warning for Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim includes very heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning.
Gangetic West Bengal is also likely to see thunderstorms and lightning, while parts of Bihar remain under a heavy-rain warning.
Northeast India Also on Alert
Heavy rainfall is expected across parts of the Northeast, including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
Assam and Meghalaya are forecast to receive isolated heavy rain, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura also remain under rainfall warnings.
Winds Could Reach 60–65 kmph in Some Areas
Thunderstorms may be accompanied by strong gusty winds in several regions.
IMD’s national forecast specifically warns of gusts reaching around 60 kmph in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema, while broader weather alerts cited in Thursday’s reports indicate that local thunderstorm gusts could reach around 60–65 kmph in some affected areas.
Residents Asked to Remain Alert
People in affected regions have been advised to avoid unnecessary exposure during thunderstorms, stay away from weak structures and trees during strong winds, and monitor official weather alerts.
Heavy rainfall could lead to localised waterlogging, traffic disruption, reduced visibility and temporary damage to vulnerable structures, while mountainous regions face additional risks from landslides and flash floods.
Weather conditions may vary significantly from district to district, and residents have been advised to follow the latest district-level warnings issued by IMD and local disaster-management authorities.
