Wipro to Exit Nifty 50; BSE to Take Its Place

In a major reshuffle of India’s benchmark equity index, BSE Ltd will enter the Nifty 50 while Wipro Ltd will exit the index from September 30, 2026. The change has been announced as part of the latest semi-annual review by NSE Indices.

BSE Set to Join Nifty 50

BSE, the operator of India’s oldest stock exchange, will become a constituent of the Nifty 50, which tracks 50 of India’s leading and most liquid listed companies.

The inclusion represents a significant rise in BSE’s standing in India’s equity market after a strong period of growth in its market value and trading activity.

Wipro to Leave the Benchmark Index

Wipro will move out of the Nifty 50 as part of the September reshuffle.

The exit marks a significant moment for the IT services company, which has been part of the benchmark for most of its history. Reports noted that Wipro’s exclusion is linked to its relatively lower free-float market capitalisation compared with the companies competing for inclusion.

Why BSE Is Replacing Wipro

The Nifty 50 review considers factors including market capitalisation, liquidity and free-float market capitalisation.

According to Reuters, BSE’s six-month average free-float market capitalisation was at least 1.5 times that of Wipro, which contributed to its selection for the index.

The change reflects the evolving structure of India’s stock market, where exchange-related and financial-market businesses have been gaining greater investor attention.

Possible Impact on BSE Shares

The announcement has already attracted strong market attention to BSE’s stock.

Reuters reported that BSE shares rose around 4% following the announcement, taking their 2026 gain to roughly 37% at that point.

The inclusion could also increase demand from funds that passively track the Nifty 50.

What It Means for Wipro

Wipro’s removal from the Nifty 50 does not mean the company is being removed from the stock market.

The company will continue to be listed and traded normally. However, its exclusion from the benchmark could create selling pressure from passive funds that track the Nifty 50 and need to adjust their portfolios.

Reuters reported that Wipro shares fell about 1.1% after the announcement, extending a longer period of weakness in the stock.

Passive Fund Flows in Focus

The Nifty 50 is closely tracked by index funds, ETFs and other passive investment products.

When a company enters or leaves the index, these funds typically rebalance their holdings to reflect the new composition.

Market estimates cited in reports suggest the reshuffle could generate significant passive inflows into BSE and corresponding outflows from Wipro.

A Major Change for India’s Market Landscape

The inclusion of BSE is also symbolically important because it places one of India’s key market-infrastructure companies directly in the country’s flagship stock index.

The move highlights how India’s financial ecosystem has expanded beyond traditional banks, IT companies and industrial businesses.

Effective September 30

The index change will become effective September 30, 2026.

Until then, Wipro remains a Nifty 50 constituent, while BSE will join the index once the reshuffle takes effect.

Investors Watching the Rejig

Investors will closely monitor both companies in the weeks leading up to the change.

For BSE, attention will focus on whether index inclusion results in sustained institutional demand. For Wipro, investors will watch how the company performs after leaving the benchmark and whether the index-related selling pressure has a lasting impact.

The reshuffle is therefore more than a routine index adjustment—it reflects the changing balance of India’s equity market and the growing prominence of financial-market infrastructure companies.
